Philippine Independence Day Celebration

Philippine Ambassador to France presents credentials to His Serene Highness, Prince Albert II of Monaco

Her Excellency Cristina G. Ortega, presented her credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Philippines to the Principality of Monaco, to His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, on 31 January 2012, in official ceremonies at the Palais de Monaco.  Ambassador Ortega was accompanied at the event by Philippine Honorary Consul General to Monaco, Dr. Stephen Zuellig.

During the private audience with the Prince, Ambassador Ortega conveyed the greetings of President Benigno S. Aquino and the Filipino people, and thanked His Serene Highness for the warm hospitality accorded to Filipinos who have made Monaco their second home.  At present, around413 Filipinos work in Monaco, 118 of whom are residents of the Principality.

Likewise, Ambassador Ortega expressed to the Prince the great appreciation of the Filipino people for the charitable works of AMADE in the Philippines, through its partner organization Virlanie Foundation.  AMADE is a non-profit child-advocacy organization that the Prince’s mother, Princess Grace founded in 1963.  Together with Virlanie, AMADE funds research for various illnesses and provides assistance to children who are victims of abuse and exploitation, including a shelter center for teenage mothers in Manila.

Ambassador Ortega also conveyed to Prince Albert II that the Philippines would be honored to welcome him again to the Philippines. Prince Albert II first made an official visit to the Philippines in 1999, at the invitation of then President Joseph E. Estrada, during which the Prince opened the Monegasque Consulate in the Philippines.  The Prince responded that he would seriously consider the invitation.

Of particular interest to the Prince was the issue of environment.  He spoke about the Monaco Blue Initiative (MBI), which he said brings together different actors committed to sustainable management and preservation of the oceans, and which will be featured in this year’s Yeosu International Exposition in Korea.  Ambassador Ortega informed the Prince that environment issues, including marine protection and biodiversity, were important priorities for the Philippines.   She also noted that the Philippine was one of the six countries involved in the Coral Triangle Initiative, which aims to protect a vast ocean expanse that has the world’s greatest density of marine life, from the impact of global warming.

The Philippines and Monaco officially established diplomatic relations on 15 December 2006.  Consular relations, however, started much earlier, on 18 October 1954.
