Philippine Ambassador to France presents credentials to President Nicolas Sarkozy
Philippine Ambassador to France, Cristina G. Ortega, presented her credentials to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, on 22 December 2011, at the Elysée Palace, in Paris. Ambassador Ortega conveyed to President Sarkozy, the greetings of President Benigno S. Aquino and his invitation to the French President to visit the Philippines in the near future. She proposed that the visit could be timed when the French President would be in the region to attend the ASEM Summit in Vientiane, in November 2012. President Sarkozy replied that he would look into the possibility of a visit to the Philippines.
On a lighter note, President Sarkozy paid Ambassador Ortega a compliment by remarking, in the middle of her presentation, that she “brought elegance to the Elysée” (as she stood out in a yellow “terno”, in a sea of black suits). Ambassador Ortega was one of the very few who sent to the Elysée Palace in a national dress.
Ambassador Ortega joined 20 other Ambassadors in presenting their credentials to President Sarkozy. During the ceremonies, President Sarkozy told the Ambassadors that he recognized the importance of their work in fostering bilateral relations, and their role in promoting the necessary reforms in the international community. He also assured them that the President’s Office and the French Foreign Ministry stood ready to assist the Ambassadors in their work. The ceremonies concluded with a champagne reception.
France is one of the main pillars and drivers of growth in the European Union, which is a major economic and development partner of the Philippines. It is ranked 17th as the Philippines trading partner, and is the 3rd biggest source of tourist arrivals from Europe, after the UK and Germany. In the recent years, France has also become a second home for many Filipinos, now estimated at around 40,000 in the country. |
